WP06 - Collecting Brain Tissue of Patients with Psychiatric Diseases
Psychiatric diseases are disorders of the brain. Currently the understanding of their molecular etiology has grown considerably, so that candidate genes were identified for several disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In order to understand the function of these genes, transgenomics and expression studies in well controlled human brain tissue are urgently needed. The tools, e.g. microarray technology, have been developed to test the candidate genes.

The major task of this activity is to build up a representative collection of well characterized brains from patients suffering from psychiatric diseases and controls matched for age and sex within the network. The samples should be well characterized concerning the clinical diagnosis and neuropathological status.
